Replacing Newmarket Rail Station

Newmarket Rail Station has been replaced as part of the upgrade of the Auckland rail network, to enable more frequent and reliable commuter services – and to prepare for electrification.

The $29M Newmarket Rail Station upgrade is a complex project involving many stakeholders, in a constrained urban environment with limited access, tight budget and timing demands, and the need to ensure uninterrupted train services.

The station project is driven by the triple tracking of the section of the two rail networks at Newmarket to allow the direct through routing of trains both north-south and to the west. It is thought that Newmarket Rail Station is the second busiest rail node in New Zealand.

WSP Opus was engaged to provide architectural, structural, building services, and engineering design services, which involved a new station concourse, two link/ footbridges and a replacement road bridge.

The concourse is an open light and airy environment that is the focal space of the station. It contains two sets of escalators, stairs and accessible lifts to serve each of the two platforms below. The concourse contains the ticketing booth, public toilets and a staff room.
