New runway lighting allows night flying at Westport Airport
We provided lighting design and engineering for this project so people can now fly into Westport Airport after dusk.
The Buller District Council commissioned WSP Opus to investigate and design the Westport airport runway lighting upgrade to allow night flying. Westport Airport is a small aerodrome 1.9km south of Westport in the South Island.
The system needed to be upgraded because without lighting the airport did not meet the Civil Aviation Authority regulation for flying at night. WSP Opus provided lighting design and engineering for this project. The new system included:
- An aerodrome beacon
- Obstruction lights on the terminal building
- An illuminated wind direction indicator
- A back-up generator
- A Pilot Activated Lighting System
- An A-PAPI approach lighting system
- Runway lighting including edges, turning bays, end/thresholds and a taxiway
People can now fly into Westport Airport after dusk. They can also fly in and out for day trips, making Westport more accessible for business and the public.
